Armed Bronx teen killed by police
Shot after chase, struggle

DAILY NEWS WRITERS
Bronx cops shot and killed a gun-toting 19-year-old last night after chasing him into a building vestibule, officials said.
Timur Person was one of four young men hanging out in front of 1240 Walton Ave. in Mount Eden who scattered when a sergeant and three uniformed officers rolled up in a squad car shortly after 8 p.m., officials said.
When his pals fled south on Walton Ave., Person tried to head into the building, where he used to live, sources said. But he was met by a locked interior door. One cop followed him into the foyer and a struggle ensued, police said. The other officers then rushed in, and one apparently shot Person three or four times, sources said. He was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital, authorities said.
Witness Hector Suarez told Channel 7 News that Person took off running when the cops pulled up. He said two officers got out of the car and chased Person into the building.
"They were wrestling with him," he said. "They told him to 'Let go of the weapon! Let go of the weapon!' "
"He was holding his waist," Suarez said. "He was just holding the gun to stay in his beltline. Right when he was on the floor, they shot him."
Cops recovered the gun, a loaded .38-caliber semiautomatic, and an extra clip, sources said.
The incident was the fifth in a series of police shootings that began when officers fatally wounded Sean Bell in Jamaica, Queens, Nov. 25, hours before he intended to wed the mother of his two children. The other three shootings were not fatal.
Family and friends described Person as an average teenager who was looking forward to celebrating his 20th birthday tomorrow.
"I'm hurting right now," Person's mom, Allene, 62, said in a low voice as she stood at a nearby streetcorner. "I went to the hospital and they told me he died. He was a normal 19-year-old kid."
She called her son - the youngest of five children - "my baby" and said that although he was a high school dropout, he was trying "to turn his life around."
She said the family lived in the building where Person died until four years ago.
"He was born and raised there. It's where his friends are. It's where he hangs out."
Police sources said he was among a group of young people standing in a semicircle and looking at the ground when cops arrived.
But it was unclear last night what they were doing before they scattered.
Timur Person's neighbor and family friend Ana Santiago, 45, said the teen was trying to surrender when the cops converged on him in the vestibule.
"He didn't even get inside the building," she said. "He was just standing there and they rolled up on him. He surrendered, and they still shot him."
"He was a great kid," said a young woman who identified herself as Person's ex-girlfriend. "He was a great son, a great brother and a great friend. He didn't bother anybody."
Person had four prior arrests, including a drug offense, sources said.
